English Grammar Masterclass:
Degrees of Comparison

Presented by: Shri Sidheshwar Narayan Awad

Adjectives change their form to indicate different intensities of an attribute when comparing nouns or pronouns. These distinct variations are known as the Degrees of Comparison.

Consider the following examples:
  1. Rama's mango is sweet. (Baseline quality attribute)
  2. Hari's mango is sweeter than Rama's. (Comparison between two objects)
  3. Govind's mango is the sweetest of all. (Highest level among multiple objects)
विशेषनाचा उपयोग नामाविषयी माहिती सांगण्यासाठी होतो. दोन भिन्न नामांतील एकच गुणांचा तुलनात्मक विचार करतां विशेषणांची भिन्न भिन्न रूपे वापरावी लागतात, हिच तरतमभाव वाचक विशेषने किंवा degrees होय.

Rules for Formulating Adjective Adjustments

Modifiers adjust their structures following strict syllable counts and internal rules:

Type / Rule Context Comparative Form (Suffix / Helper) Superlative Form (Suffix / Helper)
Standard Base Modifiers Add Suffix -er (e.g., sweeter) Add Suffix -est (e.g., sweetest)
Long Words (3+ Syllables) Place more before word (e.g., more beautiful) Place most before word (e.g., most beautiful)
Irregular Modifiers Complete morph change (e.g., better) Complete morph change (e.g., best)

The Three Primary Types of Degrees

1. Positive Degree (समभाव)

Used to represent equality or difference between two items, entities, or groups using base adjectives.

  • Affirmative Alignment: Arranged between as...as
  • Negative Alignment: Arranged between so...as
  • Sheela is as fresh as a morning flower.
  • Her eyes were as deep as the sea.
  • He is not so beautiful as she.

2. Comparative Degree (तरभाव)

Used to express that one entity possesses a higher or lower intensity of a trait compared to another using the -er / more structure followed by than.

⚠️ Common Translation Warning!
When comparing traits, ensure you compare matching elements. Avoid writing literal translations like "Your cap is more white than I". The correct structural phrasing must be: "Your cap is more white than my cap" (or than mine).
  • Mumbai is bigger than Poona.
  • They are richer than we.
  • She is fatter than he.

3. Superlative Degree (तमभाव)

Represents either the absolute maximum or absolute minimum threshold of a quality when evaluating three or more components. Superlative expressions require the definite article the or one of the before the adjective form.

  • Gold is the most precious metal.
  • Ramesh is one of the cleverest boys in the class.
  • America is one of the richest countries in the world.
